Part 2 Day of Atonement as a Picture of Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ

Prophecy in Amos 8 of Fulfillent of Day of Atonement in Sacrifice of Jesus the Messiah and Mourning of Israel

On a certain day the LORD (God the Father) says that he will cause the sun to go down at noon which is probably God's explanation in His Word of how He caused there to be darkness in the middle of the day from noon to 3pm at least in Jerusalem and Israel. This is a prophecy when God's Son our Lord Jesus Christ was bearing the sins of all the people of the world both Jewish and Gentile or of all the nations. God did this for not just Israel but the whole earth on that day as He says He will (did) darken the earth on a clear day. The reason God probably says he will make all your feast into mourning etc is because after the fact more of God's eartly chosen people the Jews realized they had a part in putting to death for no justified reason their Messiah. This was as prophesied in some of their own Old Testament scriptures. However there is more in the Old Testament about the Messiah(Jesus') glorious second coming and rule over all the earth from Jerusalem and Israel. In this scripture passage it very tellingly says that Israel mourned talking about Jesus at His first coming and His death on the cross for our sins as for an only son. This could partly mean as for the son of David but also especially means some of the Jews then and later on realized he was God the Father's or the LORD's only begotton Son. They were convicted of sinning and mourned for having a part in putting him to death. This realization of sin and mourning of the Messiah Jesus's one sacrifice for sins in an ultimate way is a major area of fulfillment of the Feast of the Day of Atonement and the scripture passage from Amos 8 is as follows:

Scripture Reference in Amos 8 of Darkness in the Daytime and Mourning for an Only Son as Reference to Sacrifice of Jesus the Messiah(Christ) as Fulfillment of Day of Atonement

And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day: And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day. Amos 8:9-10

Solemn Conditions and Fulfillment of Day of Atonement and Amos 8 in the Lord Jesus Christ Bearing God's Wrath For Our Sins in Luke 23

In the Gospel of Luke 23 the scripture says that there was darkness from the sixth hour until the ninth hour. This is referring to the Jewish time reckoning that went from sunrise to sundown. In this case the sixth hour would be 12:00 noon as in the prophecy in Amos and the ninth hour would be 3:00 pm. This passage also says as in Amos that the darkness was over all the Earth. In the next verse it says the sun was darkened. Before I might have thought God brought clouds or some supernatural darkness but now with this other reference right in God's Word - the Holy Bible in Amos 8 that God made the sun to go down at noon, I think the real reason for the sun being darkened was that God had caused it to go below the horizon at noon. God then did not raise the sun above the horizon again until 3 pm probably in its normal place for 3 pm. This scripture also says the veil of the temple was rent (torn) in the midst. This was at the beginning of the evening sacrifice and God was indicating that the veil and the Law of Moses no longer had to keep people from Him and His presence or to even keep the high priest out of His presence except on the Day of Atonement. On the contrary God was saying that the sacrifice and shedding of His blood by the Lord Jesus Christ God's Son on the cross opened the way for any and all people to have access to God through faith in His Son Jesus Christ. This is because Jesus died for our sins and rose again from the dead to give us new life and a relationship with and access to God. After the third hour when the Lord Jesus had finished paying for our sins He died physically or gave up the ghost and gave His spirit into God the Father's or the LORD's hands. After these things the centurion said surely this was a righteous man. The people especially the Jewish people then smote or beat their brests after these events associated with the Lord Jesus the Messiah suffering unto death for our sins indicating their mourning for Him and for their sins. Jesus' acquaintances and women disciples were also quite solemn then as is appropriate for mourning and afflicting their souls as in the Day of Atonement. The scripture reference in the Gospel of Luke 23 for the fulfillment by Jesus Christ of the Day of Atonement and Amos 8 as God's sacrifice for sin is as follows:

Scripture Reference from Gospel of Luke 23 of the Lord Jesus Christ's Death for our Sins as Fulfillment of Day of Atonement and Amos 8

And it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy(your) hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. And all the people that came together to the sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things. Gospel of Luke 23:44-49

Fulfillment by the Lord Jesus the Messiah by His Death on the Cross of the Day of Atonement and Amos 8 in Gospel of Matthew 27

As in the Gospel of Luke the Hebrew system of time reckoning is used here from sunrise to sundown which means the sixth to the ninth hours is from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. This was the time of darkness over all the land of Israel but the Gospel of Luke and Amos say it was also over the rest of the Earth and Amos 8 says this darkness was caused by God causing the sun to go down or set at noon (and come back up at 3:00 pm). At this time the ninth hour or 3:00 pm the Lord Jesus the Messiah cried out to God the Father asking why He had forsaken Him. Some people thought when Jesus said this in Aramaic, a type of Syrian, that He was calling for Elijah the prophet. Then someone tried to get and make Jesus drink some vinegar. Then the Lord Jesus died physically or gave up the ghost. At this time, the ninth hour or 3 pm, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom and their was an earthquake. Also the graves were opened and many of the Old Testament saints' bodies were raised or resurrected. The graves of these saints might have been opened at Jesus' death but other scriptures make it clear that they didn't rise from the dead until right after the Lord Jesus the Messiah or Christ did first. This scripture passage also says the bodies of these risen Old Testament saints appeared to many in the holy city (Jerusalem). They probably then went to Heaven. After the Roman centurion and those other people that were with Him including the Lord Jesus' disciples and other Jews saw these things concerning Jesus' death and resurrection said truly this was the Son of God. This is in direct fulfillment of Amos 8 mentioning Israel mourning as for an only Son likely meaning an only Son of God. Then some of the women disciples of the Lord Jesus the Messiah(Christ) who were watching all these things concerning the death until the resurrection of Jesus are mentioned by name. The scripture reference of the death of the Lord Jesus the Messiah (Christ) the Son of God for our sins as a fulfillment of the Day of Atonement and Amos 8 in the Gospel of Matthew is as follows:

Scripture Reference from Gospel of Matthew 27 of the Death of the Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) and Associated Events as Fulfillment of the Day of Atonement and Amos 8

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias(Elijah) will come to save him. Jesus, when he cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain(two) from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children. Gospel of Matthew 27:47-56

Mourning for the Lord Jesus (the Messiah or Christ) at His Second Coming in Gospel of Matthew Also a Fulfillment of the Day of Atonement

The analogy of lightning coming from the east to the west and being very bright is also a picture of the Lord Jesus the Messiah(Christ) coming from the east to the west and landing on the Mount of Olives just east of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount or God's Holy Hill. This will cause mourning or affliction of souls with the people of Israel and the nations especially since they will also see the nailprints for our sins still in Jesus' feet and hands. The carcase and the eagles refers as in other scriptures to God allowing the birds of the air to feed on the dead bodies of those from the nations that come up against the Jews, Jerusalem and the Lord Jesus the Saviour of the world and Jewish Messiah at the Battle of Armageddon. In this passage it says the sun will be darkened which is the same expression as in Matthew 27 and Luke 23 which means from Amos 8 that it had set at least from Israel even if it was in the middle of the day. There would also be a profound effect on the moon, stars, and the heavens although some of these statements might refer more to the effect on demons or angels not natural stars or powers in the heavens. After all these celestial effects people on Earth at the end of the Great Tribulation or 70th week of Daniel will see the Son of man the Lord Jesus the Christ or Messiah coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. He will also then have the nail prints in His feet and hands from His death for our sins. As a result of this all the tribes of the Earth will mourn because they understand how serious and evil their and our sins were in causing this great God-man the Lord Jesus Christ to be humiliated and put to death on a gruelling cross for our sins and our forgivenss. Some of these people of the nations who mourn will mourn to realize more the seriousness of their sin but will also be joyful their sins would be forgiven because they trusted in Jesus. These people would also be those who didn't receive the mark of the beast or worship him or his image in the Great Tribulation and so could look forward to living and reigning on Earth with the Lord Jesus the Christ or Messiah in the Millenial Kingdom. These are the elect. Others who mourn would be those who would then realize the seriousness of their sins causing the death of the Lord Jesus the Messiah and Son of God as they see Him coming from Heaven in glory and power but still with the nailprints but also would mourn because they now would face a condemned and tormented eternity. Both these responses are similiar to God's asking people to afflict their souls on the Day of Atonement. The scripture passage about the Lord Jesus the Messiah's (Christ's) coming again and the mourning of people on Earth for this as a fulfillment of the Day of Atonement in the Gospel of Matthew 24 is as follows:

Scripture Reference in Matthew 24 or People of the Nations Mourning Over the Coming Again of the Lord Jesus the Messiah(Christ) in Power Still with Nailprints

For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Gospel of Matthew 24:27-31

Description in Revelation 1 of Jews and Gentiles (People of the Nations) Wailing for Their Sins at Jesus Christ(Messiah's) Second Coming as Fulfillment of Day of Atonement

Jesus Christ is called the faithful witness to God the Father including His keeping the law perfectly and dying to pay for our sins by enduring God the Father's of the LORD's wrath for our sins for all time. The Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is also described as the first to rise from the dead and the one who is about to exercise his right to authority over all the kings of the Earth. Jesus' love and shedding His blood on Calvary are also mentioned and its effect to enable us to be Kings and Priests to God the Father. The blessing of God the Father to Jesus for His death on the cross and resurrection and suffering to show His and God's love for all the people of the world is mentioned as eternal glory and dominion or rule. This passage then mentions every eye shall see him come in glory from heaven at the end of the Great Tribulation or 70 th week of Daniel. People on earth will wail because of him and their realizing fully the seriousness of their sins which caused the Lord Jesus to have to die on the cross for them and us and all people that ever live. Those who pierced him refers to the Jews while the kindreds of the Earth refers to the Gentiles of people of the nations. This passage probably also refers to the wailing both of believers and unbelievers then on Earth. The unbelievers would also then wail because they would realize that everything they might have heard about Jesus as God's annointed one coming to judge the Earth and set up God's Kingdom over all the Earth is true. They would also then realize it is would then be true that they were still in their sins separated from God and now face the certainly of a tormented Christless eternity. The scripture passage of the coming again of the Lord Jesus Christ(Messiah) and the people on Earth's wailing for Him as a Fulfillment of the Day of Atonement is in Revelation 1 as follows:

Scripture Reference in Revelation 1 of Bewailed Glorious Second Coming of the Lord Jesus the Messiah(Christ) as a Fulfillment of the Day of Atonement

And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten from the dead, and the prince of the kings of the Earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all the kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. Revelation 1:5-7

Description of Mourning of Jews for Crucifying (Piercing) the Lord Jesus their Messiah(Christ) at His Second Coming as a Fulfillment of the Day of Atonement in Zechariah 12

God says upon the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem which refers especially to the Jewish people or children of Israel His Holy Spirit (the Spirit of grace and supplications). This scripture passage says they will look on Him whom they pierced. The Jews pierced their Messiah(Jesus) when they had a part in putting the Lord Jesus the Messiah(Christ) to death on the cross for our sins although the Romans also had a part and all people Jewish or Gentile at least indirectly had a part. When the Jews or those of the house of David look on Him whom they pierced when He comes from heaven in the clouds of glory and comes to Jerusalem via the Mount of Olives and the East Gate that faces the Mount of Olives they will mourn for him as for an only son. This means they will realize they had a major part in piercing the Son of God who was also the Son of David and their Messiah or special national son in that sense as also their Redeemer. There will also be bitterness among the Jews at that time for their looking negatively on themselves for putting their long promised Messiah and Redeemer to death when He came the first time. The mourning of the Jews will be especially strong in Jerusalem. To cause the Jews to focus more on their mourning and solemn things they are to mourn with the wives apart from the rest of the families apart. All these things are fulfillments of the picture of afflicting their souls at the Day of Atonement. The scripture reference in Zechariah 12 of the Glorious Second Coming of the Lord Jesus the Messiah (Christ), Son of God and Son of David and the Jewish people mourning for Him as the One they pierced as a fulfillment of the Day of Atonement is as follows:

Scripture Reference from Zechariah 12 of the Mourning by the Jews for Their Pierced Messiah Coming in Power and Great Glory as a Fulfillment of the Day of Atonement

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shemei apart, and their wives apart; All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart. Zechariah 12:10-13
